Lassi is a cooling, refreshing, probiotic drink perfect for the warm summer months. This Salty Lassi is a popular traditional dahi (yogurt)-based drink that originated in the Punjab region.
Lassi can be sweet or savory. It is a blend of yogurt, water, spices and sometimes fruit. Namkeen (salty) lassi is similar to doogh, while sweet and mango lassis are like milkshakes. It is made by blending together yogurt with water (or milk sometimes) salt or sugar and spices. The savory lassi is usually flavored with cumin, mint and salt. You can also add chaat masala to it, tastes really good!
While you may think that salty lassi and buttermilk/ Chaach are same beverage, but not. As Lassi is churned out yogurt that is made by fermenting the milk and adding a culture of bacteria. In India buttermilk is also known as chaas, which is salted and has a more watery consistency than lassi. Buttermilk is less acidic and has a slightly sour taste as compared to lassi.

Tips:
- Few coriander leaves can also be added.
- The consistency of the lassi is neither thick nor thin. For a thinner consistency, add slightly more water but do not add a lot of water as this will dilute all the flavors or saltiness in the lassi. For a thicker lassi, add less water.
- For the best lassi experience make sure to use whole milk curd that has not gone sour. The curd or yogurt should be fresh and cold.
- This recipe can be easily doubled or trippled.
- Namkeen Lassi tastes great, when served chilled.
